👋HELLO AND WELCOME

My name is Thierry Vallerand. I am a musician and an independent Canadian composer. I like to play CHESS, I like to solve puzzles like the Rubik’s® cube, I like to play board games like Catan®… But undoubtedly my favourite hobby is to compose music.

I started playing the piano by taking private lessons at the age 9 or 10. I also played the the trumpet and the tuba during high school. In August 2006 right after my secondary studies, I continued my journey in music by enrolling myself at the Marie-Victorin Cegep in Montreal. My entry profile was jazz, choosing the trumpet as my main instrument, while my output profile turned up to be composition focusing on contemporary writing techniques.

However, what actually triggered the spark for writing music did not come from my studies. I grew up in a family where music was (and still is) the main focus. For instance, my grandfather, Jean Vallerand, was secretary of the Quebec Conservatory of Music, music history professor at the Faculty of Music at the University of Montreal, violinist, composer and conductor among many other functions. As for my father, he is literally a film music consumer and one of the biggest collectors of soundtracks in the world, totaling close to 8,000 LPs and CDs. Over time, having listened to a lot of this collection, I developed a taste and an unparalleled interest for orchestral and instrumental music with a brand of choice for a style resembling as film music.

Therefore, my signature is resumed in two words: INSTRUMENTAL & ORCHESTRAL. This means that there are no lyrics and that I often —to not say always— write for instruments used in an orchestra, whom the most important one is the piano. The genres of my works may vary from classical to contemporary, ethnic, medieval, new age, electronic, etc.

Thank you for your visit. Feel free to contact me to share your comments, appreciation or critics on any of my works.

P.S. You can download for free one of my songs, The Scheme, if you wish. Please listen and enjoy.
